Can Anyone Guarantee You’ll Rank #1 on Google?
Not honestly, and here’s the proof. This isn’t a “we think” situation. It’s how Google works.
1) Google says no one can guarantee #1
In an article written by Google Search Central (their official SEO documentation), Google states: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” They also warn business owners to be cautious of anyone claiming special relationships with Google or “priority submission,” because that isn’t how Google works.
Why this matters: If someone is promising #1 across the board, they’re promising something even Google says can’t be promised.
2) Google changes the rules multiple times per year
In Google’s documentation about core updates, they explain that they roll out broad updates several times per year, and those updates can shift rankings even if your website hasn’t changed.
Why this matters: A site can be doing the right things and still see movement because Google is constantly re-evaluating what it believes is most helpful for a search.
3) There isn’t one universal “#1” result
Google explains that results can vary based on things like location and other context, which means “#1 on Google” is often different from one person to the next.
Why this matters: You and a customer can type the same search and see different results. That’s part of why guarantees fall apart quickly.
4) Even #1 doesn’t always equal clicks or leads anymore
As SparkToro reported in their 2024 Zero-Click Search Study, a large share of searches end without a click because users get what they need directly on the results page, via maps, ads, featured snippets, and other SERP features.
As Ahrefs mentioned in their study on AI Overviews, when those summaries appear, the #1 organic result can see about a 34.5% lower click-through rate (their analysis used a large keyword dataset). Ahrefs is a widely used SEO software and research company known for publishing data-backed studies using real search behavior.
Why this matters: Ranking well is still valuable, but today’s search results can reduce clicks even when you’re doing great.
What we focus on instead at Modern Yellow®
If “#1 for everything” isn’t a real promise, here’s what is:
The searches that actually drive revenue
We focus on your priority services and locations that bring in real jobs, not random keywords that look good on a report.
Visibility that’s measurable, not hype
Instead of “we’ll be #1,” we track movement for priority terms into the Top 10 and Top 3, and measure performance over time (because rankings can fluctuate).
More leads, not vanity rankings
Vanity rankings are rankings that sound impressive but don’t produce business, like being #1 for a low-volume keyword, or a term people aren’t using when they’re ready to hire.
Conversion improvements when people land on your site
We improve what happens after the click: clearer messaging, trust signals, stronger service pages, better FAQs, and faster mobile experience.
Clear calls to action that guide people
A call to action is the next step you want a visitor to take, like “Request a Quote,” “Call Now,” or “Schedule an Estimate.” We make sure those are obvious, consistent, and easy to use on mobile.
